Masatoshi MAKUUCHI, M.D., Ph.D.
A pioneer and a recognized international expert in the field of HBP surgery, Dr. Makuuchi is currently the President of the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, and the Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo.
Throughout his career, Dr. Makuuchi has taken initiatives in developing methods of perioperative managements such as ultrasound guided PTC, BTBD, GB drainage, PVE, intermittent hemihepatic inflow occlusion, and warm ischemia in living donor, and surgical techniques such as subsegmentectomy, and inferior hepatic vein preserving hepatectomies, contributing to establish techniques for safe surgical operation. He is also the first in the world to successfully perform adult to adult LDLT.
Dr. Makuuchi’s works have produced more than 1000 journal articles and book chapters, and he serves on the editorial boards of world’s leading journals in the fields of HPB surgery, ultrasound medicine and transplantation surgery.
Dr. Makuuchi is currently the President of International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists (IASGO), and he is also the member of many national and international societies. He has given more than 900 lectures as invited speaker at national and international congresses. As recognition of his works, he has been conferred title of honorary member from various medical societies in the world: American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (1989-), New York Academy of Science (1996-), European Surgical Association (2004-), Societas Chirurgica Bohemica (2005-), The Serbian Medical Association (2006-), Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand (2006-), The European Society for Organ Transplantation(2007-), L’ Association Française de Chirurgie (2007-), Chinese Society of Surgery (2007-), Societa Italiana di Chirurgia (2008-), American Surgical Association (2009-), Societe de Chirurgie Bulgare (2009-) and Egyptian Society of Surgeons (2010-).
